Trinity #1 - Review

Trinity # 1 is the start of a DC weekly series centering on Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. It’s very much a yin and yang story. Opposite the three heroes are three villains Morgaine Le Fey, a man known as “Enigma” (most likely The Riddler) and Despero, though he hasn’t shown up yet. The six major players
share different versions of the same dream. Each sees the dream differently and it’s tailored to their persona. The short version is the universe isn’t empty and may even have a hidden consciousness that can be unlocked with incredible repercussions. There’s a lot of information covered in this comic so you may need to read parts of it more than once.

The art is pretty solid here, Mark Bagley provides a lot of good detail for the close-ups and the backgrounds. My favorite scene is when the Flash fights Clayface. Flash’s speed is depicted much more as a red blur so it looks he’s in twenty places at once while knocking Clayface everywhere. A drawback is that a lot characters look similar from a distance - the great detail in their faces seem to go away so someone like Clark Kent looks a lot like Bruce Wayne at a glance. It’s a minor gripe, but it’s there.

Fate has a lot to do with the story, so if that’s not your thing this isn’t the book for you. A lot of balls are put in the air very quickly, so the question remains as to whether or not it’ll pay of down the road. My only  complaint with Kurt Busiek’s writing is his handling of Batman’s dialogue. When he appears as Bruce (which is most of the book) he seems to stay in that persona even when it’s just him talking to Superman and Wonder Woman. Luckily, when he’s in the suit it feels more at home, the no-nonsense character we know and love. Not much is revealed in this opening chapter but there’s room for a lot of potential. (Grade: B)
