Amazing Spider-Man #571 – Review

By Dan Slott (Writer), John Romita Jr. (Pencils), Klaus Janson (Inks), and Dean White (Colors)

Just when I thought the mysteries couldn’t get any deeper, writer Dan Slott kicks it up a notch. With all sorts of little odds and ends hinted at in these pages, I’m seriously beginning to wonder how much will get wrapped up in the next two issues. Of course, these little mysteries take second stage to the nonstop action that has rocked this story since the first issue. To those who were excited about last issue’s meeting between Menace and Norman Osborn, the two have a pretty good “talk” (that occurs in between punches and thrown pumpkin bombs). The only thing disappointing to come from this fight is the lack of return to the Green Goblin suit as the cover hints at.

As for the mess that Spidey got himself into at the end of last issue, don’t worry, he gets out of it. Perhaps more ironic than the recently redeemed Eddie Brock trying to help Pete but inadvertently hurting him, is who exactly Peter’s “saviors” turn out to be. Let me say now, if you thought that Peter’s situation looked bleak at the end of the previous chapter, that’s nothing compared to the danger he will be in next issue after a rather surprising twist of fate that occurs here.

Oh, and one cannot rant about how great the story is without acknowledging the one who brings the tale to life: John Romita Jr. continues to present more of his stunning art within these pages. I especially enjoy the extremely creepy look of Anti-Venom. I’m not sure why, but the pale whiteness and spidery-like hands of his make him, potentially, the most eerie looking symbiote yet.

Well, with only two chapters remaining, I can’t wait to see how this will end and what will be left open for later. This is easily one of the most entertaining comic book reads of the year and if you’re not reading New Ways to Die, you are seriously missing out. (Grade: A)
