Green Lantern Corp #46 – Review

By: Peter J. Tomasi (writer), Patrick Gleason (penciller), Rebecca Buchman, Keith Champagne, Tom Nguyen (inkers)

The Story: The assembled ring corps are in the middle of a battle royale that has been going on for many issues. Guy Gardner adapts a Star Trek strategy to productive use, but both he and Kyle predictably face loved ones from their pasts in the forms of black lanterns. Interestingly, the Anti-Monitor has a role to play and his relation to the black lantern battery is revealed.

What’s Good: I enjoyed seeing the Anti-Monitor again and I liked how he fit into the black lantern mythos. It was something unexpected for me, and unexpected always means good. Gardner’s use of the Tholian web was also a cool, yet logical extension of how the corps of light have been working together to handle the black lanterns. Tomasi also included a gem of a character moment when Guy (as diplomatic as ever) is trying to get the other corps to work with him and says: “…but don’t ya wanna wipe these things out so we can get back to killing each other again?”

What’s Not So Good: We’re nearing month eight of Blackest Night, and although the cohesiveness of vision of this event has been impressive, it’s starting to feel a bit long, especially some of the pitched battles that are starting to blend into one another. I’m not sure if the event itself has some pacing problems or if there aren’t enough ideas in every book (ex.: Blackest Night: Superman, Blackest Night: Wonder Woman and this series) to fill the time it takes to complete the eight issues of the Blackest Night main series. Either way, I’m getting tired of the endless, giant battle. On the art side, I’ve never been a huge Gleason fan (too plastic for my tastes – his art seems to lack texture), and I think the battery of inkers don’t help keep the style consistent either. Some of the art works quite well (like Guy and Ice), while some looks a bit amateurish (check out the Herb Trimpe-like feel of the final splash-page).

Conclusion: I’m sad to say, but this issue is forgettable, and maybe even skippable (too bad that’s not a real word). Save your money and go straight to Blackest Night #8, unless you want to see the same battle you’ve seen in the last few issues.
