Best From The Past Week: Severed #3 – Lots of good comics last week that ended up in a figurative pig-pile: Sweet Tooth #26 had that creepy story and great Matt Kindt art, I Zombie had that uncluttered story and awesome Jay Stephens art. Vescell #2 is a fun, sexy romp. But I think Severed was the best done. What’s making this comic work so well is that we already know the ending (or at least part of the ending): the old man loses his arm. And as we see the old man as a boy running into the creepy old-man cannibal with the sharp teeth….well….you’re just on pins and needles waiting for the moment when the arm will come off. You spend the entire comic yelling at the page, “No! Don’t go back to the old man’s apartment and drink beer with him!!!!” and “No! Don’t put your arm in the bear trap!” Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft are doing a masterful job of playing with that anticipation and Attila Futaki is giving us this great sepia-toned art. Wonderful issue!
Most Anticipated This Week: American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #5 – Sean Murphy is an incredible artist. He’s so good, in fact, that I’d buy this issue even if it wasn’t being written by Scott Snyder (who is hogging this spot frequently). But since it is written by Snyder, we’ll get the conclusion to this story about vampires in WWII Nazi Germany and the ancient vampiric stuff that got dug up. I’ve never enjoyed vampire fiction before, but I love all the intricate layers that Snyder is putting on the different races and history of vampires. And it’ll look awesome having Murphy draw it. The only bad news is that this series is over after this issue.
Other picks: Batwoman #2, Unwritten #30, Blue Estate #6, Morning Glories #13, Pigs #2, Amazing Spider-Man #671, Legion of Monsters #1, SHIELD #3, X-Men: Regenesis #1, Irredeemable #30
