Dean’s Top Picks

Best of the past week: Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom #1 – This comic had it all: fun story, enticing mysteries, pretty ladies and wonderful art. It’ll be interesting to see if IDW can resist the urge to overexpand their Rocketeer franchise the way they have every other property they hold licenses to.
Most anticipated this week: 1). American Vampire #30 – This series is nothing but excellent as evidenced by the fact that a #30 issue is still placing so high on a “most anticipated list”. This is a middle issue in the Blacklist story-arc that examines vampires hiding among Hollywood elite during the Red Scare. But, don’t let “middle issue” term deter you……Scott Snyder has figured out the formula for making even the middle issues of his stories entertaining.
2). The New Deadwardians #6 – It’s criminal how little chatter this series is getting considering its quality level. It’s certainly worth checking out to see how Edwardian England found a relatively clean solution to a zombie uprising. The only failing of this story is that I’m more interested in the world than I am in the central murder mystery.
3). Morning Glories #21 – After going through a phase where I was a little frustrated with Morning Glories for not giving me all the answers, I’ve gotten pretty accepting of the confusion. The art in this series is wonderful as you see just how many emotions Joe Eisma can sell via body language/facial expression and the stories are always very well written. I don’t think I’ve ever read a word balloon in MG and said, “That was really awkwardly written….”
4). Prophet #28 – It’s a light week, so Prophet makes the list. I’m honestly getting frustrated with the pacing of this series and it’s overall lack of direction. This may be it’s last chance.
5). FF #21 – Won’t it be sad when Jonathan Hickman leaves the FF series? These issues since he finished his big FF story have been splendid.
