Best of past week: Morning Glories #21 – MG has turned into a really enjoyable series now that I’ve accepted that ALL of the answers won’t be presented to me at the end of EACH 6-issue arc.  Spencer and Eisma’s original cast of students get a few older friends (?) in this issue and little by little it’s becoming “less unclear” what the Morning Glories Academy is all about.

Most anticipated this week: Well, if you’re not into #0 issues, it’s kind of a light week…

1. Sweet Tooth #37 – There are only a few issue left and each of them will be jostling for the “most anticipated” spot.  Last issue saw the group finally reach Alaska and begin to find answers to the plague that wiped out most of humanity.

2. Transformers: Regeneration One #83 – I’m not usually a fan of modern Transformers comics because they fail to bring the same magic as the 1980s Marvel series.  Well…..a few months ago IDW drafted the original Marvel creators and picked up where that series left off with an issue #80.5. A friend put me onto these issues and they’re fabulous.

3. Harvest #2 – I really enjoyed the first issue of this series that showed how a down-and-out surgeon ends up working for an illegal organ harvesting operation.  It was nicely paced, believable and featured really good art.

4. Amazing Spider-Man #693 – ASM is just better when Humberto Ramos is the artist.  When he’s doing the drawing, even a less exciting story concept has some life to it.  I wasn’t totally thrilled with the debut of Alpha, but have some confidence that Dan Slott has something original planned because he’s always pretty novel.

5. Mind the Gap #4 – This series hasn’t been blowing my doors off yet, but the Jim McCann story is still very intriguing as the players are beginning to slide into their roles.  It doesn’t hurt that the art has been gorgeous.

Pick of the Week: Powers #11 – Finally, a comic that truly lives up to the line that “nothing will ever be the same.”  This was a MASSIVE issue, full of massive art and massive developments.  Two character developments, one main characters life turned upside down, and a complete change for the status quo of Powers leading into the new FBI-based series.  This was awesome.

Most Anticipated:  Hawkeye #2 – Next to Saga and maybe Fatale, Hawkeye was my favourite first issue of the year.  Simply put, I can’t wait to see how Fraction and Aja follow up on it.  This looks to be a great book and the start of something truly special.  If you don’t buy it and it gets canceled due to poor sales, it’s ghost will haunt you for all of eternity.

Punisher #15 –  Meanwhile, this book’s ghost is about to haunt you in a few short months as its run gets cut tragically short.  Rucka’s Punisher is my favourite 616 Punisher comic ever and last month was fantastic.  With the head of the Exchange killed in brutal fashion, this series is at a crossroads and I’m interested in seeing where Rucka takes us and how we wind up at the “War Zone.”

Defenders #10 –  Another great book whose spirit is a-haunting.  With only three issues to go, this issue promises big answers about the Concordance Engine and a guest-appearance by Ant-Man, who is a perfect for this comic.  Wacky hijinks and Jamie McKelvie artwork abound!

Mighty Thor #19 –  Well, it was between this and Invincible Iron Man.  Suffice it to say, this is the greatest week ever if you’re a Matt Fraction fan.  Anyway, this is a must-read for me.  Two issues in and this Everything Burns crossover is EXCELLENT.  This is so much the case that I even called the last issue of Mighty Thor the best single issue of Fraction’s run.  Also, we get more fantasy comics from Alan Davis which, alone, is worth the price of admission.  I’m really, really digging this crossover so far and am genuinely looking forward to this one.
